How to Install a Gutter Downspout Adapter Instructions

Step 1: Plan Your Drainage Route 

Before you begin installing your gutter downspout adapter, you should make sure that you have your drainage route planned out completely. The goal of adding a PVC extension is to get the runoff from the gutter to an area that is better for absorbing the water and will keep any standing water from leaking into your foundation. 

Many people choose to drain water underground, but if you are not familiar with the kind of soil you are dealing with, this may not be a good idea. Instead, use the PVC extension to drain the water out into the street or onto a patch of gravel somewhere far away from your home’s foundation. 

Step 2: Cut the Current Downspout to Size

After you have planned out your drainage route, you can then cut the current downspout to size. More than likely, your downspout will be at an angle where it lets out close to the ground. If you want to have your PVC extension start above that angled piece, cut the downspout about one inch above the connector. This should be enough space for you to angle your extension how you need it to be without losing too much of your original downspout. Be careful, as the corrugated metal of the downspout will be sharp once it has been cut. 

Step 3: Fit and Glue the Adapter to the Downspout 

Your gutter downspout adapter should be the same standard size as the downspout itself. Because of this, it will slip right onto the existing section of the downspout with a little bit of pressure. However, you will need it to be waterproof, so sealing the joint with epoxy is essential. 

Your waterproof epoxy will come in a combination of two syringes, which include the epoxy and a hardener. When these two compounds mix, they create a strong, waterproof seal that is perfect for this project. While wearing gloves, squeeze the double syringe of epoxy and hardener around the inside of the gutter downspout adapter and press it onto the end of the remaining downspout section.  

Step 4: Lay Out Your Extension 

After you have the adapter in place, you can then start laying out the rest of your extension. Using your PVC pipe and connectors, build the extension until it gets to the area where the drainage will be settling. Make sure that your pipes are at a relatively consistent downward angle so the water can flow freely to your drainage spot. Use your epoxy to secure all the sections of the extension and let everything dry for at least 24 hours before you run any water through it. 

Step 5: Test the Adaptor and Extension 

Once your epoxy has had time to dry, test it by running some water through it with a garden hose or bucket. Keep an eye on every joint, especially where the adapter meets the downspout. If you notice any leaks, dry the area thoroughly and apply more epoxy, spreading it evenly with a brush or a gloved finger. This will keep any standing water from building up in areas where it could cause damage to your foundation or lawn.
